My sister Rachael, giving a presentation about asthma....

So, you want to know what ASTHMA is........

Doctors are not quite sure how you can get asthma, but they do know that once you have it, your lungs react to things that can start an asthma attack.  When this happens, three things place in your lungs....

  • The cells in your air tubes make more mucus than normal. This is a sticky and thick substance that tends to clog up the air tubes making it really hard to breathe!
  • The air tubes tend to swell, just like it does when you get a scrape or irritation on your skin.
  • The muscles in your air tubes tighten up making a narrow passage for the air to flow, which makes it difficult to breathe.

Asthma attacks may start very suddenly or can take a long time to develop.  Attacks can be severe, moderate or mild.  Things to remember are:

  • Asthma IS a lung disease and can be life threatening
  • Asthma IS chronic... You can live with it everyone
  • Asthma cause breathing problems, which are called "attacks" or episodes of asthma
